Meet Kara

Honorable Kara A. Buscaglia is running for election as Erie County Family Court Judge. She is a lifelong Amherst resident and a graduate of Williamsville South High School. Kara graduated from Cornell University where she obtained a Bachelors of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations. She was a competitive member of their Division I gymnastics team, named a scholar athlete and was a member of the Dean's List. She returned to Amherst to attend the University of Buffalo School of Law. She graduated, with honors, in 2002 with a concentration in Criminal Law.

She began her law career as an assistant district attorney in the Erie County District Attorney's Office. During her time at the DA's Office, Kara appeared in every single Town, Village and City Court in Erie County.  She also had experience in County and Supreme Court, having tried several Jury Trials to verdict.   After prosecuting for nearly three years, she opened her own practice.  Kara has owned her own Law Firm for nearly 20 years, focusing on criminal defense, matrimonial law, and family law. 

For 19 years, Kara has practiced family law in Erie and Niagara County.  Kara has representing all types of litigants in Family Court, including mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, birth mothers, and adoptive parents.  Kara has handled every type of case seen in family court, including abuse and neglect matters, custody and visitation matters, support hearings, adoptions, youth part matters, and juvenile delinquent matters. 

For the past eleven years Kara has also served as the Judge in the Town of Amherst. She has served our community well and continues to work hard in this position. She works in all aspects of the Court including the criminal court, vehicle and traffic court, domestic violence treatment court, drug treatment court, housing court, landlord tenant court and small claims court. In 2018, she established an Opioid Intervention Court, the first of its kind in a Town Court. This court helps those battling an opioid addiction receive treatment immediately.

Kara is a member of the Erie County Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, the Women's Bar Association of Western New York, the Women's Lawyers of Western New York, and the Minority Bar Association.  

Kara has been happily married for over nineteen years and resides in East Amherst with her husband, Frank, and their four children, Andrew, Kathryn, Elizabeth, and August, along with their three dogs, Ruthie, Charlie, and Lillie. 

Kara knows what it takes to serve as an Erie County Family Court Judge.  Kara knows that families matter and our children must be protected.  Kara will work hard to keep families together and to protect our children.
